Over the last couple of weeks I have encounter several very long-lasting and successful couples. It was beautiful. I took the opportunity to ask a few of them for some tips or advice for us younger lovers. Here is a summary of their responses which were almost the same across the board.
1. It's not easy. Tests will come and with every challenge you both work through, the relationship will grow stronger and stronger.
2. Always put the other person first. Meaning before you make a decision, consider the feelings of your partner. If you both do this, your interests are protected and considered.
3. No other family comes before yours. Meaning the one you are building. As we all date in a more diverse world, family tension is inevitable. But, you must protect your family at all costs, even from your own.
4. Never forget to say thank you and show appreciation for the daily and small things. You will never know what someone went through to come through for you. You must be the biggest cheerleader for your partner.
5. Respect each other. Belittling the other will be damaging and it can not ever be reversed.
6. Communication is critical (this wasn't surprising). If either one of you need to talk, make the time, and make it safe. Don't push them to seek refuge elsewhere.
7. The thought of loosing your partner should scare the shit out of you. Make sure they know this. If you are ok with them not being there, then they shouldn't be.
8. Try to match the grind. Nothing is more unattractive then someone with no goals, dreams, drive and determination.
9. Never stop dating. Shower each other with affection, love and admiration.
10. Finally, effort goes a long way. This does not mean buy expensive gifts but simply ensure your partner knows that you and your family are their highest priority. Don't assume they feel this way and tell them often verbally and through your actions. Make it a point to put a smile on there face everyday.
And evvvvveeerrryyyyone said that "if you get a good one, keep him".
